Who Are We?

When I walk into my son’s room, I’m quickly reminded of what a talented athlete he is. From baseball to football there are many trophies, ribbons, and medals. He is going to need another shelve to hold them all, and for the many more I know he will receive as each new season begins.

He has been blessed with a talent and gift from God, but it’s not who he is. It’s a bonus to the wonderful creature God created. I’m sure he even feels a sense of pride when he walks into his room looks around, and can see what he has accomplished in sports, with the Lord’s help.

Society can put labels on us. They try to define who we are by what we have. We also can try to define ourselves by what we’ve accomplished, or gained by seeking the things of this world. We can think others will like us, and we will gain more respect.

Maybe for some, it is living in the best neighborhood, driving fancy cars, having all brand named clothes, or making lots of money that make them feel they are somebody. Perhaps they also want others to think that they are somebody, by the things they have. What happens when those things are gone, or slowly start to slip away.

How will we feel then? Will we lose those so-called friends we thought we had? Will they be there for us without the cars, houses to back us up? Will we feel good about ourselves? Will we still “feel like we’re important or somebody” then? Society tells us if you’re famous, have a lot of money, or have that big house, then you are “somebody.”

Proverbs 11:28, “Whoever trusts in his riches will fall, but the righteous will thrive like a green leaf.” Everything we have is a blessing from God, a bonus from Him. It’s not who we are. We are God’s creation; His children.

That’s who we are.

God does bless His people, and that is wonderful. It’s not wrong to have nice things but not to the point of letting it change us in a negative way. We shouldn’t need the material things of this world to feel important or valued. When we have God and His love, that is all we need to feel valued and important.

God’s love is the most important thing we could ever need, not the things of this world.

Gift of Love

I heard a line in a Christmas movie once where a woman told a man that the first gift ever given was a child- meaning Jesus being born. It was a great movie, and that line is one that I will never for
