What Is Your Foundation?

We have all heard and repeated the story of the three pigs to our children. Children like the story but adults need to see the spiritual comparison. The story is different as compared with the Bible, but there is a similarity in the concept.

Matthew 7:24-27 tells us, “Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash.”
Would you ever build a house without a concrete foundation? Imagine telling the contractor to dig holes and put the lumber in the ground, in the hope that it wouldn’t fall. It would never withstand nor last any of nature’s elements. Imagine your contractor trying to convince you that you really needed a concrete foundation, yet you still refused. Perhaps your reason may be it’s just too costly and not necessary.
For our own lives there is a very serious consequence. We are told we who hear the word of God and do it are considered wise. We are concreted and rooted upon Christ the Rock. There will be rains, floods and winds that come against us, but we will not fall. Then there are those who will not pay the price and want a short cut. They build their lives on what they think and believe, and not on the Rock of Christ. When the rains, floods, winds (storms) come to them, they fall. They cannot withstand all the storms and they’re completely ruined. “Great is their fall.”
Until we are in heaven, we will face storms, many storms. Given that, the next question is, “How am I prepared for those storms?” “Have I short cut so much and now I’m in the wait and see mode?” In our physical homes we feel safe, protected and sheltered. Natural storms will break out, however, we are safe in our home. When we purchased or built our homes, we made sure they were on a foundation, knowing our home would need that to stand.
What about our personal and spiritual lives? What about the others in our house? Will the choices we make bring protection and safety to our household? Remember, our choices never just affect us, they affect others around us.
When we hear God’s word we have to apply it our lives. Building our house (our lives) upon Christ the Rock is the only way we will survive. Joshua 24:15 says, “ But if serving the Lord seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your ancestors served beyond the Euphrates, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you are living. But as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.”
To ensure God’s protection over us and our homes, we need Him to be our foundation. He is the everlasting Rock, and our safety. Knowing that there will be storms in life, ask yourself, “What is my foundation, and will it withstand anything that comes along?”
