On Empty

My husband once ran out of gas while he was doing errands. It wouldn’t have been a big deal, but our daughter was having her birthday party in 15 minutes. He called me to come get him, bring the gas can with me, and take him to the gas station. So, I did. On the way back, I looked at his car and thought, “What a nice car he has, but it is useless without gas.” It couldn’t be driven, it was “stuck there.” Do we always have a full tank? Are we full enough of what we need?
“And this is my prayer: that your love may abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight, so that you may be able to discern what is best and may be pure and blameless for the day of Christ, filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ- to the glory and praise of God” (Philippians 1:9-11)
“I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his spirit in your inner being, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love may have power, together with all the Lord’s holy people, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ” (Ephesians 3:16-17).

The Lord is the only “gasoline” we need. To be filled up with Him and His Holy Spirit is enough for us to “run” forever, and never run out. When we are filled up, then we are useful because we are full of His love and strength, and we can do anything.
