Masks

Who is the great pretender- is it you or is it I? Who is the one wearing the mask of “Having it all together?” Who is it that awakes each morning and, in the mirror, puts on their daily mask? That one who doesn’t want anyone to know what is really going on deep inside. That one who is barely living because of their choking reality. That one who feels their alone because no one is really seeing or listening. Some wear masks to cover up while others wear a mask of denial Some don’t want others to know their pasts while others don’t want their presents exposed. How did each of us get this way? Who even gave a cause for the invention of the mask? For Christ did not set us free to then hand us a convenient mask. Christ said our sins are forgiven and that in trouble He would always be there. He said to come to Him as we are for only He truly knows our hearts. It is us who has invented the mask- that mask of the ultimate cover up. We have by judgment, gossip and sneers given cause for the mask to appear. We have not allowed ourselves or others to freely be themselves. To recognize people, make mistakes and that for some they are facing real pressing issues. We have collectively handed out masks so that everyone looks the same. We have chosen to look the other way because even we at times choose to wear our daily mask. So, who will be the first one to boldly take off the deceiving mask? Who will be first to openly speak out for the pain they inflicted and or endured? Who will be willing to be exposed and to truthfully share? Who then also for them will be willing to be there? Who will be willing to admit their addictions and or fears? Who will also be brave enough to say, “I know, for I myself have once been there.”

Oh, if only they could one by one go and be tossed in the trash. Never again to be seen and never again around to be reminded or tempted. If only one person would start too so that others could be free. For its only when we see face to face that true healing can begin. It’s when through eyes of Christ we can clearly see others and ourselves that freedom begins. So, who will be willing to go first- will it be you or will it be me?

Gift of Love

I heard a line in a Christmas movie once where a woman told a man that the first gift ever given was a child- meaning Jesus being born. It was a great movie, and that line is one that I will never for
